About this image: With help from one of our sister school's in the U.S., Mtaala Foundation built the "Community Hope Library" at Awegys School. Few libraries exist in Uganda, so this library provides our students with essential resources while improving literacy among local village children.
Our Current Educational Partner
Alice looks out from her former home.
In 2008, we came upon a remarkable school in Kigo, Uganda: Awegys Secondary School. Awegys School was started by a woman named Alice who had worked for thirty-nine years as a school administrator, teacher, and mother to ten children. Alice knew that there was no secondary school within walking distance for local students.
And so it began: In 2004, after a brief retirement, Alice moved in with her family, turned her former home into dormitories and classrooms, used her pension to pay teachers’ salaries, and opened the facilities to needy students. Out of her dedication, Awegys Secondary School was born.
Inspired by Alice's devotion and sacrifice, The Mtaala Foundation identified Awegys Secondary School as an educational partner and is committed to building Awegys School and providing the school with the resources it needs to flourish.
