Jackie   Jackie recently received a sponsor.

Jackline (Jackie) is nineteen years old and in Senior Four.  She currently lives at Awegys School and, when at home, stays in her father’s house with her siblings.  Her parents separated when she was a baby; Jackline’s stepsister Agnes is also a student with Mtaala Foundation.

In her free time, Jackline likes watching football (soccer) games and reading.  Her favorite subject in school is commerce, and she hopes to attend university to become a nurse.  “In order for me to achieve my goals I should read hard,” Jackline writes.  “I would love to lead a successful life and ask for your help and love.”

Jessy    Jessy recently received a sponsor.

Jessy is seventeen years old and a student in Senior Two.  His brother, Masette S., is also a student with Mtaala.  Despite a two-year age difference between the boys, Jessy devotedly looks after his brother. When not at school, they live with their father and stepmother; however, the brothers find life difficult at home and instead chose to board at Awegys School.

Jessy’s favorite activities include listening to music, watching movies, and visiting new places in Uganda.  He loves studying geography—as it allows him to learn about other parts of the world—and hopes to one day work in computer science.

“I usually ask myself if I will make it in life,” Jessy writes.  “Our parents are poor and cannot afford to look after us…I want to join university…I will work hard to make it.”

Mary    Mary recently received a sponsor.

Mary was born in 1992 and is in Senior Four.  She currently boards at Awegys School and when at home, lives with her aunt.  Mary’s parents live in a village several hours away with her four siblings.  “My elder siblings all dropped out of school because of lack of school fees,” she writes.  After primary school, Mary worked as a housekeeper for several years to save money for her school fees, but when her employers were no longer able to pay her, she was forced to drop out of school because she could no longer afford the tuition.  Then Mary heard about Awegys School, where she hoped she would find a sponsor and continue her education.

She has big dreams: after graduating, Mary hopes to join university.  “I want to become a teacher,” she writes. In her free time, Mary loves playing sports, but in school, her “favorite subject is English…I like writing stories [and] composing English songs.”  She adds, “I pray that I get a sponsor so that I can study for a bright future.”

Masette, a talented writer and artist, spends his free time reading and playing volleyball and football.  In class he focuses on chemistry, because he would like to attend university and become a doctor “so as to help the country.”

“I have to work hard in my studies” to meet these goals, he writes.  “I pray that I get a sponsor so that I can achieve my dream and feel loved, also.” STUDENT ID: 0008

She dreams of finishing secondary school and going to university to become a doctor and learn how to treat the sick. She has recently finished primary school and feels it will be difficult for her mother to pay tuition for her as well as her older sisters.

“I’m very happy to have you visiting us,” she told Mtaala volunteers, “because it gives me hope that I will get help to become a helpful person in the future through education.” STUDENT ID: 0056

Judith    Judith recently received a sponsor.

Judith is fifteen years old and lives with her parents, both of whom are HIV positive. Her parents do not work. They grow crops which they eat and sell to raise some money. However, when Judith’s parents don’t get enough medication from the hospital, they are too weak to garden.

Judith loves playing netball and volleyball and digs the land in her spare time. Her favorite subject is English. She has repeated her last year of primary school, because her family could not afford to send her to secondary school (which is more expensive) and it is “difficult to stay at home.” She dreams of attending university and becoming a nurse “to help people with HIV because they are vulnerable people which need special care.” STUDENT ID: 0046

Monica   Monica recently received a sponsor.

Monica is fifteen years old and has recently finished primary school. Monica lives with her uncle after her father died of HIV/AIDS in 1998.  Monica’s uncle cannot afford for her to continue at secondary school. Without sponsorship Monica will be unable to continue her education.

Monica says, “I feel bad about not being able to continue with my education.” She would like to go to training college after secondary school and become a nurse.  Monica enjoys English and playing netball. If able to continue her education she will study “read hard” at school, she says. STUDENT ID: 0047

Monica   Monica recently received a sponsor.

Her eldest three brothers have a different father, he was a soldier and was killed in the civil war before she was born. She shares the same father as her sister, Jennifer, who is also seeking sponsorship. Monica’s father died in 2007 after a long sickness. The family do not know what it was. All the children now stay with their mother who is unemployed.

At fourteen, Jimmy was abducted by the LRA.  He was forced to loot villages and fight against civilians and governments soldiers.  During the seventeen months he was forced to spend with the LRA, Jimmy was shot in the left arm and right leg.  To this day, he carries painful scars from the incident.

‘I’m very happy to be back in school to work for my future. Thanks to my sponsors’, says Jimmy.
